As a SAHM or a WAHM, there is so much we’re responsible for on a daily basis. Right from the moment I wake up, it’s going to go. Having 3 kids and no help from anyone other than my husband can be tough at times. Oftentimes, I’m left with the thought, I wish there were more hours in the day. As a mom, the only thing to do was to find out “how to wake up early in the morning“? And that’s what I did.

One of the best habits I’ve developed as a mom is waking up early, or I should say, waking up before my kids. I can do the things that need to be done before my kids wake up, and it feels so good. For me, it is super important to have my own morning routine before they’re awake. As much as I use the time to prepare things for the family, this morning routine is important too because I need time for myself. Because we all know that once your kids wake up, you really don’t have any time for yourself for the rest of the day until bedtime.

Since my kids wake up around 7 am, I choose to wake up at 5:30 am to give myself some time to do my morning routine, pending tasks, and chores before taking care of my little monsters. If this is something that you want to do too, today I’m going to share some tips on how to wake up early in the morning, including how this has helped me become a better mom and has also helped me maintain my sanity.

1. Make sure sleep the recommended hours

Getting a good night’s sleep (I know this one might be an obvious one but for some reason, it’s probably a pretty hard one to do.) Since Doug owns a restaurant, he comes home a bit late, so I always try to stay up to wait for him. But since I have to wake up early in the morning, I can stay awake till 11 pm max. So usually I try to go to bed by 10:30 pm so I can wake up at 5:30 am and get a solid 6-7 hours of sleep. Also, very important to know how much sleep do you actually need. I’ve experimented for a month and realize my sweet spot is about 7 hours. Trust me you can actually have too much sleep, when you have too much sleep it’ll make you more tired and groggy.

2. A big No to GADGETS

If you’re asking, how to wake up early in the morning, my answer is “No phones before and after bed.” Trust me, I know this is hard, especially because part of my job is social media so, it’s definitely tough not to check my phone. But I’ve learned to set boundaries and not let that take over my life.

So before I go to sleep, I’ll read a book (this will put me to bed real fast) or turn on some soothing music and do a short 10-minute yoga session. Also, not using my phone at night won’t trigger my brain to start thinking about things I need to do…then I’ll stay awake.

3. Room Temperature and soothing environment

Make sure your room temperature is around 65-67 degrees Fahrenheit. Believe it or not, it absolutely affects the quality of your sleep. So, keeping your room cool is pretty important.

This one is pretty important because, believe it or not, having just a little light in your room from your phone or even a street light can affect your sleep. So we always set our phone to “sleep mode” and do not disturb” “setting. Also, black-out curtains will help if you have really bright street lights.

4. Eat Right

If you ask me how to wake up early in the morning, one of my answers is “EAT RIGHT” We all know that what we eat affects how well or bad we feel. So when I go to bed it’s really important for me to not have any caffeine like tea or soda before bed because it’ll make me stay up and go to sleep later. If you’re looking for a snack, try snacking on pumpkin seeds, pumpkin seeds great source of magnesium and it will help you relax.

Just make sure you’re not eating too much before bed because it’ll make you stay up longer.

5. Scale back time

Start by scaling back your sleeping time 15 mins a day. If you usually go to sleep at 12 am and your goal is to sleep at 10:30 pm, make sure you scale back 15 mins at a time so you wake up earlier and earlier. Take your time to let your body adjust. Trust me it’s not going to happen overnight. I promise you if you stay consistent you’ll start waking up at your ideal hour.

6. Soothing alarm

Set your alarm but use a soothing noise instead of a loud beeping noise. This will aid in your transition if you are thinking about how to wake up early without an alarm. Also, if you use your phone as an alarm clock, try putting your phone somewhere you’ll need to get up to turn it off. In addition, I use my phone as an alarm clock, I also put it on airplane mode so it won’t bother me during the night.

If you’re thinking about how to wake up early in the morning, this is probably one of the most important things to consider doing. Consistency is key here. Try to go to sleep and wake up at the same time every day or at least 5 days of the week. You can actually train your body to get used to waking up early just by doing it over and over again.

I no longer need my alarm to wake up since I’ve been waking up at the same time for so long every day.

7. Reward yourself

One thing that really helps me in my quest of how to wake yourself up in the morning. especially as a mom, is to find something that makes me feel good. It can be exercising, yoga, walking, running (I take Opie on a run every other day because since having kids, I’ve neglected him a little bit so this is how I get my me and Opie time), meditating, gardening, etc.

For me, it is exercising, meditating, and then going to my garden. It makes my morning peaceful, and I don’t get a feeling of being rushed…Plus I love my quiet time. I don’t like the feeling of being rushed. Because you know as soon as your kids wake up your time is theirs.

This one might seem a little counterproductive but trust me, it’s not. Exercising really helps you sleep better. It releases endorphins, your body releases serotonin and dopamine, so the more you exercise the more of those chemicals you release which helps you have a deeper sleep. But make sure to not exercise right before going to bed.

I hope these hacks help you out on how to wake up early in the morning! Trust me, if I can do it you can too! I hope you enjoyed this post! Comment below if you’ve started waking up early!

love,

Tiffany
