The Best Kid’s Daily Routine – A parents guide for healthy habits

Is it just me who thinks so or did summer just blow by so fast?? Now we’re all already thinking about the back-to-school schedule, meal planning, stay-at-home schedule, back-to-school shopping, and the most important thing is getting ready to get back on the school schedule. I am a BIG BIG fan of routines and daily schedules. If you don’t have a routine for your kids…you need to get on it asap. Start making your child routine from the time they are born, and when they grow up make their toddler schedule. Routines are great for babies, toddlers, kids, older kids… or even adults. A kid’s daily routine is the first step towards having discipline in your life.

Having a good routine is great for kids because they know what to expect and most importantly this will help them be more independent. Getting them to sleep at a certain time (no more staying up with mommy and daddy), waking up early and brushing their teeth, eating breakfast, and rushing out of the house to get to school on time…Ooo… that was like a taste of how it would be like again. Since we all took a little break from that routine…it is so important to get back on it now!  Our kids literally missed a year of school, and like every parent, I am so happy to send my kids back to school. Going to school physically is very important for their upbringing, they get to learn and socialize with other kids, and (you’d strongly agree to this one) most importantly mommy needs some time back for herself. (Can I get an Amen) So since we’re all counting down to school starting again…

I have got a couple of tips to share with you guys on how to get our kids to adjust to the daily routine set before school starts. Don’t forget to subscribe to my newsletter and get this “kid’s daily routine chart printable ” free.

#1 Sleeping schedule

Okay, the important aspect of a perfect kid’s daily routine is the sleeping schedule. I’m sure I’m not the only one whose sleeping schedule is off by an hour…right?? I think this is by far the most important kid’s daily routine to get back on. Having a tired and grumpy kid in the morning is because of the absence of your kid’s daily routine. So, start scaling back your kid’s sleeping schedule 2 weeks before school starts. Since my kids are sleeping at 9:30..my ideal time would be 8:30 pm. I’ll start scaling back 15 mins a day for a week and then the second week have them sleep at 8:30 pm to lock in that sleeping routine.

#2 Waking up

Waking up at a reasonable time. For me, the kids usually wake up at 7:15 am and they usually go and start drawing or playing. But since we’re getting back to a morning routine, they need to wake up earlier to get ready for school.

#3 Morning routine

After waking up at an optimal time the most important thing in the kid’s daily routine is getting them ready. Brush their teeth, wash their face, get them dressed, make their beds, feed our pets, etc. I have created a Habit tracker for my kids and trust me it works like magic. Adapting to good habits sets a good foundation for our kids. So by having this and checking them off, helps keep them on track. Make sure to get my kid’s habit tracker template at my Etsy shop.

#4 Breakfast

Having a breakfast plan and routine in advance is so important for us parents and kids. I plan my meals on Sundays so I know exactly what I’m cooking for the kids. This will help you save a lot of time when it comes to getting out of the house on time. (Make sure to check out my 5 healthy breakfast ideas)

#5 Lunch planned

Having lunch prep on the day off and planning is so important. I have the whole week’s breakfast and lunch plan in advance so I don’t have to think about the day off. Having fruits washed and cut will also save you time.

#6 Night time routine

This is my nighttime routine

  • Eating dinner at 6 pm
  • Bathe by 7 pm
  • Storytime
  • Getting their school bags
  • Clothes ready for school.

#7 Prep talk

Make prep talk a part of your kid’s daily routine before going to school, getting them excited to go back to school is so important. Since my kids have been out for so long…their attachment for me is at an All-Time High. Getting them happy and not nervous about school will be key to success. Taking them to buy their school supplies, clothes, etc. will help ease the anxiety they might have.
